Discolored teeth are a major aesthetic problem, especially in the front teeth area. Professional teeth whitening and the resulting enhanced aesthetics significantly improve self-confidence and help looking younger, more positive and more vital. Before bleaching, a professional teeth cleaning is carried out to remove all plaque in advance. Caries control and caries treatment is recommended. The dentist can then discuss the bleaching nuance with the patient. If the teeth whitening is carried out professionally, it is also risk-free.

„In-Office Bleaching“

For in-office bleaching, preparations with a higher concentration are used in the dentist’s practice. In preparation, the gums are protected with a flowable material (“gingiva protector”. The dentist applies the whitening agent directly to the teeth to be whitened and takes effect there. The effect can be intensified using a bleaching lamp. If the whitening is not yet sufficient, the procedure can be repeated. As a rule, one or two treatments are necessary for the first time in order to achieve a lasting result (one year or longer). Power bleaching is usually chosen when it comes to whitening individual vital (living) teeth or if bleaching should be accelerated.

„Home Bleaching“

Whitening with individually manufactured tooth retainers. Here, an individualized plastic splint, which is specially made in the dental laboratory and covers the teeth, is fitted for the patient. To whiten your teeth, this tray is filled with a whitening gel. Depending on concentration and individual initial situation, the patient wears these splints for between one and eight hours. For “age discoloration” five to seven treatments are often sufficient, for more stubborn discoloration, e.g. through tetracyclines, 15 or more treatments are often necessary.

„Home Bleaching“

Is a method for whitening a non-vital, root-treated tooth. If a single, non-vital (dead) tooth is to be whitened, this can be done with an inlay in the tooth. The crown of the tooth is opened for this purpose. This has already been drilled out by the previous root canal treatment. A whitening agent is filled into the tooth cavity. After the whitening agent has been removed, the opening is filled again. It takes a few days for the peroxide to diffuse from the inside of the tooth through the enamel. If the tooth color achieved does not correspond to the desired result, the method can be repeated.

Effect of whitening agents on dental fillings, crowns, bridges. The color of dental fillings and veneers of dental crowns and bridges are not changed by tooth whitening. You should be prepared to replace fillings or dentures if color disharmonies occur after bleaching, especially in the front teeth area. The dentist must explain this to the patient. Professional tooth whitening before re-inserting dentures brings with it the same problem. In these cases, too, the patient must be informed that tooth whitening must be carried out from time to time in the future, to avoid color differences.
