There are different forms of milk tooth caries such as bottle caries, milk bottle caries, sugar tea caries or sugar juice caries. Bottle caries also usually occurs on the front teeth of the upper jaw, and in severe cases also on other teeth, which results in serious destruction due to frequent and long-term consumption of heavily sweetened bottle food. Caries in milk teeth must be treated by a dentist because caries progress more quickly in milk teeth than in permanent teeth. Milk teeth have a placeholder function for the permanent teeth, which is why the development of caries in milk teeth should be avoided if possible. Carious milk teeth are also the fate of the permanent teeth, because permanent teeth can become infected, so that dental caries in the permanent teeth is inevitable.

Caries prevention in childhood

Fissure sealing is a method in which the chewing surfaces of the molars and the inside of the upper front teeth are sealed with composite. This protects from bacteria the grooves on the chewing surface. Children’s teeth then remain free of caries for many years. Nevertheless, a caries check by the dentist twice a year is recommended because the interdental surfaces cannot be sealed.

Why is it important to seal teeth?

    • Morphology of fissures
    • Mineralization effect
    • Lack of self-cleaning
    • Problematic oral hygiene
