In the case of severe malocclusions IOTN 4 and 5 health insurance covers the entire costs of the treatment for orthodontic fixed tooth regulation, including ongoing check ups. No approval is needed for the treatment.
For minor malocclusions IOTN 1 to IOTN 3, the rule is that you receive the diagnosis from your orthodontist and submit an application for pre-authorization of the treatment your health insurance company. If your health insurance company approves , the treatment will proceed as usual with insured pacient co-payment and the health insurance company will provide a subsidy for fixed dental braces. If the health insurance company refuses to cover the costs then the treatment must be paid as a private service.
Since July 2015, the new law on free braces has been in effect for children and adolescents aged 12 to 18 years inclusive, with severe malocclusions that require serious treatment according to the “Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need” (IOTN treatment need level 4 or 5).
All IOTN cases 3 will also continue to receive statutory subsidies for orthodontic fixed tooth regulation, which must also be approved in advance by the respective health insurance company.
